How can I save a new list item to a folder instead of the root of the list?

I have a large list (30,000+) items, subdivided into folders by fiscal year, etc., to keep View totals under the SPOnline threshold of 5000 items.

There are also multiple Content Types in the list, some of which are saved to folders underneath the FY folder.

Is there a way, using fd.spBeforeSave() or some other function, to save a newly added item to the correct folder, without forcing the user to start in that folder before creating a new item?

Currently, this functionality is not supported.
