Meet New Modern Templating Engine

We're thrilled to announce the launch of the Modern DOCX templating engine in Plumsail Documents! The Modern engine offers everything the Classic engine does, plus much more, making it easier to work with complex documents.

Key improvements

  • Data transformation: Easily modify your data within templates, without the need for pre-processing.
  • Conditional content: Significantly improved logic for hiding or displaying document blocks based on data conditions—no more workarounds for complex cases!
  • Value manipulation: Advanced functions to format, calculate, and manipulate data.
  • Simplified syntax: A cleaner, more intuitive syntax to manage complex templates.

Currently, the Modern engine is available in Processes, and you can enable it under Template Settings by selecting Modern from the dropdown.

Support for it will soon be added to all document creation actions on Power Automate, Zapier, and Make.com. Stay tuned!

Classic engine remains in place

Don't worry—the Classic engine will still be fully maintained and continue working as usual, so nothing will break.

Why switch?

If you're building new projects or need more flexibility with data transformations and conditional content, the Modern engine is the way to go. Check out our documentation for details on the differences between the Modern and Classic engines.

Share your feedback and questions

We can't wait for you to try the new templating engine! We'd appreciate any feedback as we continue working on and expanding it—your feedback would help a lot. We'll also be happy to answer any of your questions!

When will the modern engine be available for Power Automate?
I know that I can use a custom connector to use the modern engine but that requires that the user has a personal/premium license for Power Automate.

Hi @TSR,
You can use Processes and the modern engine is already available in Power Automate through the Start document generation process action. This works without creating a custom connector and without requiring a premium license.

For the Create DOCX from template action in the Plumsail Documents connector our team is currently working with Microsoft because the updated version with the modern engine has not passed through their publishing process yet.
