"Move document from..." creates new checked-out version

I’m just trying out the “Move document from…” workflow action and whilst the document is moved it doesn’t do what I expected.

If I move a document using the drag and drop facility via “View in Explorer” or via the “Content and Structure” menu, the document is moved along with its version history.

However using the workflow action the version history is not copied and a new checked-out version of the document is created.

Ideally when I move a document using the workflow action I’d like it to keep the version history and not to check the document out. Is this possible or is it feature by design?

Hello,

Unfortunately the workflow action doesn’t support moving document with history.
This is due to limitations of SharePoint Client Object Model.

Thanks for the reply.

You say the CSOM doesn’t support moving the history okay, that’s a failing in the CSOM then I suppose! But you haven’t explained as to why the moved document is “checked out” as part of the move.

Why does this happen?

Please check the option “Require Check Out” in List Settings - Versioning Settings.
If it is “Yes”, after copy all documents will have “Checked out” state.

By request we could add check-in option in Copy workflow actions, for this please leave your request to sales@plumsail.com

I saw the same issue in other client, as we found a Document library didn’t have default content type - Document
