Having to specify a password in clear text in a workflow action is a terrible idea from security point of view, but it will also require a service account to be set up for these workflows, as otherwise passwords for users expire and the workflows would fail as soon as they do. Why is it a requirement to specify password for the Email actions?

You can specify credentials individually or setup it via Credential Management Page. We recommend to use for workflow a special service account. Also you can manually setup ‘Password never expired’ policy for the account.
